2013 in Review!!

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2013 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A New York City subway train holds 1,200 people. This blog was viewed about 4,200 times in 2013. If it were a NYC subway train, it would take about 4 trips to carry that many people.

In The Polar Express: Part I and The Polar Express: Part II, I describe my journey to The Boston Tick-Borne Illness Community Conference and the stops along the way…on this “Search-For-Hope-And-Belief” Express. In search of…the bell and it’s magical ring.

The first stop was my arrival at Massachusetts General Hospital. The second was the site of the presenters that day, in O’Keefe auditorium where Dr. Phuli Cohan lead the locomotion with the first presentation. And now, The Conductor himself would be steering us. Yes, The Conductor who has made comfortable 12,000 “passengers” along the way in his 26-year career as a lyme “engineer” and now as the world’s preeminent lyme expert. Dr. Richard I. Horowitz of NY.

Here he was. As in the holiday classic, A Christmas Carol, the messenger of Lyme Disease past, present and future. And in his hands he held a vast book, no reference. 500 pages plus. “Why Can’t I Get Better? Solving the Mystery of Lyme & Chronic Disease.” A gift of painstaking detail and infinite knowledge. An intense guide that presents complex lyme and co-infection antibiotic regimes like mathematical algorithms. An exhaustive resource of proper diagnostics. But most of all, an encyclopedia of compassion for the lyme community.

Can you hear the bell? Do you believe?

Can you hear the bell? Do you believe?

I took notes as The Conductor began his lecture. Introducing the main concepts of his book. Concepts that represent a new paradigm in the management of Lyme and chronic disease. Concepts that will be read by physicians, patients and ideally the CDC and government as well. A 38-item questionnaire. A 16 point differential diagnosis map. Emphasis on Multiple Systemic Infectious Disease Syndrome (MSIDS). Antibiotic combinations and rotations. Herbs and nutraceuticals for immune function, toxin elimination and antioxidant support. With the ultimate goal of providing a manual and model for chronic disease clinics throughout the country.

The lecture left me exhausted and confused, with so many complex details and protocols. And that was my first impression of the book when I began reading it at home as well. I wondered how anyone might realistically be able to digest it all and make practical use of it. And I wondered how I could ever read more than the first few pages. A lymie who can barely get through a TIME magazine. I thought maybe this wasn’t going to be as valuable as I had thought. Not only to me, but more importantly, the physicians out there who we are all relying on to read and implement.

…And then…and THEN. I slowly started to unwrap it. In layers. First one chapter. Then another. And another. Not from start to finish. That would lose my attention and be too overwhelming. But rather selecting a particular section or topic, wherever my interest or energy felt focused for the moment. And then I couldn’t stop. Skimming, searching, going from chapter to appendix to index back to a new chapter. Now I couldn’t contain my excitement. Like Ralphie. In “A Christmas Story”. Trying to decode the Orphan Annie secret message. It was possible. This book…it truly allows for the decoding of lyme disease. I hear it. The ringing of the bell. The bell that can only be heard when one believes. I believe now. Jingle bell, jingle bell, jingle all the way.

Belief is everything

Belief is everything

The lecture was just too complex for me to break it down for you in notes. Give yourself the gift of the book this holiday season. In the meantime, I did come up with a bit of a teaser to highlight some of the main points. It’s called “The 12 Days of Lyme Disease” to be sung to the tune of 12 Days of Christmas. I know I know, most people have 12 years of Lyme Disease. But let’s look at this through the eyes of the Ghost of Lyme Future for a minute. This will be Lyme Disease after physicians and patients have read Dr. Horowitz’s new book. After experts from all over the world have begun collaborating because of it. After the CDC has changed their guidelines. After the government has funded research. After Dr. Horowitz’s dream of integrative chronic disease clinics has been realized. Then…then there may be the 12 Days of Lyme Disease. Sing it with me:
