After yesterday’s tragedy at the Boston Marathon, I wrote this poem for my children. This is a departure from my normal blog content but the emotions of this tragedy consume me and this is my way of expressing it while delivering an important message as a mom.

If I Die

If I Die
While I Wake
At a marathon,
movie, or baseball game
Know that I
Didn’t die in vain
Know that I
Died in freedom’s name

If I Die
While I Wake
At a concert,
fireworks or parade
Know that I
Didn’t die in vain
Know that I
Rejoiced in our country’s praises

If I Die
While I Wake
On a subway ride
To a business meeting our tourist place
Know that I
Didn’t die in vain
Know that I
Whispered liberty’s name

If I Die
While I Wake
On a jetliner, cruise
bus or train
Know that I
Didn’t die in vain
Know that I
Revered the eagle’s face

For If I Die
While I Wake
Because Darkness showed
Its ugly face
Know that I
Have no regrets or tears
For living my life
Despite my fears

For If I Die
While I Wake
Following my dreams
In spite of evil’s sake
I will have stared it down
And defended our freedom
With my brothers and sisters
Even as civilians

And if you ever
My dearest child
Find yourself
Amongst the crowd
When darkness falls
And rears its head
You’ll unite as americans
And light shall prevail instead

If I Die
While I Wake
I leave you now
This message to take
Be not sad or afraid
Live the life that God gave
Remember my words and the power they bring
And always always let freedom ring
